VHF marine Radio Licence
All operators of marine radios (except 27MHz) are required to hold the appropriate qualification to operate the device. A Certificate of Proficiency or Statement of Attainment, issued by Australian Communications Authority, shows that the holder has the skill to operate certain types of radios and are also a requirement for any off-shore sailing races and most fishing tournaments.
Recently, a serious incident occurred at South West Arm creek that required the urgent help of emergency services. Without the help of attending vessels that had a Marine VHF Radio and appropriate knowledge of radio protocols, the outcome could have been far worse.
This highlighted the fact that there are a number of areas around Port Hacking (and beyond) that have little to no mobile phone coverage, and a need for VHF radio communications training for recreational boat owners.
The RMYC Port Hacking can assist with obtaining the correct qualification through one of our preferred service providers, Sea School Marine. Mike Harrison of Sea School Marine Training is offering a half day course to get your Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency Long & Short Range for just $295.
If you would like to know more about obtaining your certificate, please reply to firstname.lastname@example.org with your name and best contact number and Mike will be in touch to work out a course date that suits you.
Remember, these systems exist to provide search and rescue assistance to vessels in distress. Using the correct radio protocols and procedures ensures these systems work effectively and also the safety of your passengers.
